Basic Indian Law August 12-13, 2008
The subject of federal Indian law is as interesting as it is complex and challenging. Most practicing attorneys fail to realize and appreciate the role that
federal Indian law plays in the overall legal system. An understanding of the fundamental principles of federal Indian law is extremely necessary in addressing
the needs of tribal organizations. Federal Indian law describes the relationship between tribal governments and individual Indians, and the federal government
of the U.S. Such law is contained in separate volumes of the United States Code and the Code of Federal Regulations (both as Title 25). Further, the
fundamentals of such law can also be found in almost 400 treaties, in various opinions rendered by the Solicitor of the Interior Department, and in countless
case law decisions.
