Tribal Court Procedures August 14-15, 2008
Establishing and Maintaining a Tribal Court system is one of the most fundamental assertions of a tribe's sovereignty. The ability to adjudicate disputes
without outside intervention helps to establish a system of checks and balances necessary to curb authoritative abuses as well as allow for individual
recourse.
The U.S. Congress passed legislation that would establish a yearly base funding level of more than 50 million dollars for administering nearly 200 tribal
courts. This measure will greatly strengthen tribes to develop, administer and operate a sound and progressive tribal court system.
